Chapter 28

Every muscle in his body hurt. He was used to lugging equipment in and out of events, but he wasn’t in the shape to be moving large pieces of furniture up and down a hillside or staircases. He feared that if he let go of something, it would find its way into the water never to be seen again, but most importantly, he didn’t want to appear a weakling in front of Brady Owens. Brady was tall and strong, unlike himself. Duncan was in good shape but was shorter in stature and more compact. In hindsight, he wished he hadn’t discouraged Patrick from tagging along to help, but having him there would only have made him feel more inadequate to the task.

He poured himself a glass of water and dropped two ibuprofen on his tongue to help ease his pain and suffering before crawling into bed. He sprawled across the top of the sheets, allowing the air to blow across his body in the hopes of cooling down. The heat only added to the discomfort of this day. Oh, how he dreamed of the day he’d have enough courage to kiss Emily Vassure, but the more he learned about the likelihood of their sibling nature, he didn’t dare, cursing the very thought. She was everything he wanted in a woman. She was strong willed, which in his mind was refreshing. She was an independent, talented businesswoman with a good head on her shoulders, and she was confident. What attracted him most about her was her realness. She didn’t need makeup or fancy clothes to be attractive; no, she was naturally beautiful and an answer to his prayers.

Too long he’d waited for the right woman to come along. He wasn’t searching per se, but he was keeping his eyes and heart open to the possibility of finding love. Now, he thought he’d finally found his match until the unexpected change of events. He lay there, still feeling the warmth of her mouth upon his, and was unsure of what to make of it. It sickened him that he enjoyed it, knowing what he knew, but he just hoped, in one sense, that he was very wrong in his assessment. Until he knew for sure, he’d have to erase the memory of it from his mind.

The day had been quite perplexing; smiling at the thought of his current events. He and Emily had teetered between laughter, silence, and indifference. He wasn’t sure how to act around her, feeling as though she were a rabbit in the wild, and each time he’d get close, she’d run and hide. They’d been at an impasse until they broke for a beer. She’d relaxed and let her guard down a bit. It was then that Emily shared the chat she had with her mother regarding the mysterious woman in the painting. She said her name was Sally and Helen’s best friend. Duncan was genuinely moved that Emily wanted them to hang her likeness in her home.
